Jumping Cebuanas in Mayon 360

Coleen and Lyra still managed to do a jump shot after running 81 kilometers around Mt. Mayon Volcano

Hats off to these two women from Cebu: Coleen and Lyra. Bisag nag zombie walk na gani (even if they’re already zombie walking), they still managed to do the jump shot.

And just consider this, they did this after running for 81 kilometers in the just recently concluded Mayon 360, Albay province’s only ultramarathon around the scenic volcano, now on its second year (gallery here).

While shooting late in the afternoon in Sto. Domingo, with the last few hours of the race’s cut off time, I chanced upon Coleen on the road and she was all smiles. In her Facebook page, she wrote:

Thanks for this, Estan! I was so glad to see a familiar face on the road to Legazpi. Dako kaayo akong smile (I really had a big smile).

Congrats ladies for making it!

Runners getting ready for the gunstart

I salute the runners who did the Mayon 360 ultramarathon last Saturday, 21 April in Albay. Despite being too tired and at the last few hours before cut-off, they still smiled for the camera.

This is the second year of Mayon 360 where I was again able to cover. The images below.

Happening on 21 April, 2012, the most awaited Legazpi ultramarathon, the Mayon 360 will unfold. Here, runners go around the beautiful Mt. Mayon volcano in a 50 mile race that will not only test their running mettle but also make this race one of the most scenic. Just imagine, a 360 degree view of the world’s most perfect cone. Just like last year, I will be covering this event.

For registration and additional info, check out the Mayon 360 website.

The inaugural Mayon 360 is an 80 kilometer ultramarathon race around the circumference of Mt. Mayon. It’s a well organized race courtesy of Yves Yu and the JCI Legazpi, the same people who organizes the Mayon Trail Run.

Merlita during the early hours of the morning, Mayon 360

Proud with her win

I’m very proud of fellow Cebuano, Merlita, who topped the women’s division in the first Mayon 360. The race, is an 80KM ultramarathon race around the circumference of Mt. Mayon.

She led the race among the women in the 75KM only to be overtaken by the Kenyan. But, Merlita, ever the fighter, took courage and didn’t want to accept being second place.

In her words: bahala na ko makoyapan ko sa finish line basta modaog ko (nevermind if I faint at the finish line, I should win). And thus, she was one happy ultramarathon racer.

Again, congrats Merlita!

With her finisher's medal, post awarding ceremony
